Garden Water Management
Garden water management and garden water storage ranges from a simple rain water butt to pump-equipped underground storage tanks that capture surface water run-off or storm water. The water saved may be used for gardening or car washing – or even in washing machines and dishwashers. And of course, since new legislation that came into force on 1 October 2008, permeable hard landscaping is now required if you want to avoid an expensive planning permission application for new front garden paving.
Planning permission is not required if the following applies:
- The area is NOT a front garden area.
- Areas of hard landscaping are constructed using permeable products.
- If provision is made for runoff from impermeable hard landscaping to drain into soft landscaping with sufficient permeability (or into a specially constructed soakaway).
- If the hard surface area covers less than 5 square metres.
Planning permission is required if the following applies:
- Rainwater from impermeable hard landscaping at ground level has nowhere to run but into the household drainage or onto a public highway.
- If the property is a listed building.
- If the property is in a conservation area, a World Heritage site, a National Park or an area of outstanding natural beauty, restricted permitted development rights may apply.

Make better use of rain water
If you’re keen to make better use of water from your garden or property, we can help. With years of experience, a commitment to green garden design and great ideas we’ll design and install a sustainable water management or water storage system that’s right for your property.
- Rain water management and harvesting
- Water butts
- Filter collectors
- Irrigation water management
- Run-off capture and garden water storage
- Pumped garden water management systems
- Automatic mains water back-up systems
Simple garden rainwater storage technology means it’s easy to collect and filter rainwater in a garden water butt directly from downpipes. Filtering makes it perfect for use in garden drip-feed watering systems as well as garden ponds – another way we can help you get the most out of garden water storage and build a greener, more sustainable lifestyle.
Harness the power of permeable paving
Permeable paving (a key technology behind sustainable urban drainage systems) enables control of storm water at its source. A wide variety of products is available, including block paving, clay pavers, permeable macadam and self-binding golden gravel.
Taking the worry out of garden water management and drainage
Even if you don’t want to harvest rainwater, we’ll always consider the drainage water management of any landscaping work on your garden, your neighbours and the local environment. With fully qualified building expertise in the team, we’re equipped to handle garden drains, soakaways, all aspects of garden drainage and the landscaping uses of permeable membrane technology.
