An Elegant Tiered Patio Completes a Stylish Barn Conversion

Location

Winchcombe, Gloucestershire

The brief

The client had recently completed a charming barn conversion within a private hedged garden on a steep plot. They wanted steps and a small patio area to complement the adjacent kitchen/dining area, accommodate occasional informal outdoor relaxation, and to use otherwise ‘dead’ garden space. A tight budget and the steep garden added further challenges…

Project execution

Imaginative yet practical design packs several endearing features into this small tiered patio. As well as the upper paved deck outside the kitchen, the combination of Bradstone Old Town paving (weathered limestone), reclaimed Cotswold stone and stone gathered from the garden was perfect for a series of steps, two raised herb beds, and a secondary deck area, complemented by re-seeding of the surrounding lawn.

The paving contrasts well with the stone of the walling elements and the barn conversion itself. And by having two tiers, the design integrates well with the slope and avoids a high drop-off. Despite the low budget, the construction makes a striking addition to the property and adds both aesthetic and practical appeal to what would other wise have been unused garden space.
